| The Big Smoke
Debate
Objective
Work with SmokeFree London to put the issue of smoke free
public places on the capital’s agenda, encourage debate,
and act as a stepping stone to legislative change.
Tactics
M&F worked closely with the London Health Commission
who ran the Big Smoke Debate consultation. An exclusive was
given to the Evening Standard, and Londoners’ views
were captured on a website questionnaire. They were asked
if they thought seven different types of venues, from taxis
to pubs, should be smoke free.
Results
Almost 40,000 Londoners registered their views, making it
one of the largest public health consultations ever conducted,
and 78% said they would support a ban on smoking in public
places.
The Mayor has recently stated that pubs and restaurants have
ignored the problem for too long. He is also reported to have
written to the government asking for powers to ban smoking
in London's workplaces.
The Government is now considering legislation on restricting
smoking in public places.
